Isla Holbox Fly Fishing Lodge
The island of Holbox is home to some of the best Giant Tarpon flats found anywhere in Mexico with not only resident giant tarpon, but the large migratory fish as well. The larger fish inhabit the extensive flats on the north side of the island in deeper water, but because the waters are so clear, the majority of the fishing is all done by sight fishing to moving fish. It is not uncommon to find large schools of these big fish and once you find them, the excitement is in full force.
- Sight fishing to giant tarpon
- Mangrove channels that hold baby tarpon, snook and provide all weather fishing
- Walking, bicycling, and golf carts are the only means of travel
- Oceanfront rooms
If the weather is wrong for the big fish flats, there is a great alternative available to you. A maze of mangroves surround certain areas of the island and are home to baby tarpon, snook, barracuda, and other species. Isla Holbox guides have an answer for any type of weather. You are insured of a great day of fishing.
Holbox Fly Fishing and Adventure Lodge is also a great place for non anglers. There are plenty of activities including whale shark viewing, cenotes or underwater caves, eco tours, oceanfront kayaking and island exploration.
When you come off the water for the day, you will come back to the Lodge, which is modern and new. Your gracious host Luciano will be there to meet you. Feel right at home with Luciano’s hospitality, espressos and great stories.

Fishing
Your typical day will start early. After studying the weather conditions, your guide and you will formulate a plan for the day over breakfast. Since giant tarpon are the main quarry for anglers visiting Holbox, you will most likely head to the flats that harbor the big boys. Average fish range from 50 – 175 pounds and can be found in 10 – 50 feet of clear water. You will be using shooting heads or sinking lines to get down into the water column where the tarpon are feeding on migrating baitfish. You can expect to chase and intercept these moving schools of tarpon looking for the best shot. If the fish gods are with you and the tarpon takes your fly, you can expect the fight of a lifetime often lasting an hour or more. Once you have landed one of these beasts and are worn down from the fight or if the wind comes up making conditions unfavorable, you will retreat to the mangroves and lagoons to chase smaller tarpon. In the mangroves, these fish can average 5 – 15 pounds with a big juvenile tarpon getting up to as much as 40 pounds. This, plus the numerous opportunities one will have casting to snook lying tightly under the mangroves, will round out any fisherman’s day. Within the mangrove lagoons you will have some more precise casts to rollers, gulpers and cruising fish, not necessarily long casts, but it helps to be accurate. There are a lot of anglers that will choose a full day in the lagoons after a few days battling the huge beasts on the offshore flats as the fishing is physically a little easier and never ending.
