Campeche Fly Fishing Tarpon Bay
There are many anglers who seek nothing more than the exciting blasts and leaps of tarpon. The addiction is difficult to break. Giant tarpon can prove to be picky, challenging and laborious when on the line. If you want lots of shots at aggressive juvenile (baby) tarpon, Campeche should be on your must do list. Baby tarpon fishing has increased in popularity for just these reasons.
There may be no better place to seek this excitement than the tarpon nirvana found in Campeche, Mexico. Fishing is set near the city of Campeche, in the northern part of the Yucatan. Campeche is perfectly sized city full of Mexican history and featuring the ruins of civilizations past. Plus, there’s shopping, restaurants, festivals, and beaches making it the perfect place for groups with non-angling guests.
Fishing for baby tarpon is like sight fishing streamers to giant brown trout with the added bonus of the leaps and bounds a rainbow makes when hooked. It is a great target casting event. Six through eight weights are perfect. Anglers should expect to fish from the boat.
The fishing day begins early in the morning having an American style breakfast. Afterwards, you will be taken to the pier for departure. Your experienced locally born and raised guides will take you in their 18’ Hewes Red Fisher & Mako 17.5'' Inshore Series Flat Boats to start your fising day. In 10 to 50 minutes the adventure starts!
Rolling tarpon will become evident shortly after entering this wonderful fishery. Sight fishing to feisty baby tarpon in 1 to 5 feet of water in one of the largest reserve areas in the Yucatan (Los Petenes Biosphere) is the normal routine. The area is vast. From Campeche City to the border line limits of the Yucatan State, you will have 80 miles of mangroves, turtle grass flats & an uncountable number channels packed with back country tarpon. This fish are undisturbed & react amazingly well to any fly pattern.
An average angler can expect to jump 5 to 10 tarpon on an average day. If you can cast 30 feet or more anlong the mangroves, you'll love the results of your efforts. If you find tarpon on the flats, you'll have to stretch your cast out to 50 feet to have a reasonable shot. You'll normally ender your day at 2:00 pm for a siesta and a refreshing dip in the hotel pool.
During the high tides the fish are high up in the mangrove rivers and channels, making for fun casting challenges down mangrove tunnels and ledges. During low tide, the fish school up and roam the flats. Most guides will agree that the best time to catch these exciting fish is in the changing of the tides as the tarpon are moving and feeding from one location to the next.

TRAVEL INFORMATION
How To Get to Campeche Tarpon Bay
New! You can now fly directly from Mexico City to Campeche with Mexicana airlines. The rates are almost the same as flying from Houston, TX, to Merida on Continental Airlines. You don't have to change terminals in at the Mexico City Airport any more. You will avoid a 90 minute drive from Merida to Campeche using the new route. You will receive a $150 per person discount for arriving directly in Campeche.
Many travelers prefer to fly into Merida or Cancun, rent a car, and make the 2 or 6 hour drive respectively. This enables the visitor to stop and visit some of the ancient ruins or other sights along the way. For the less adventuresome we’ll arrange a pickup for you, but encourage you to consider the new direct flight to Campeche where you'll save time and money.
After clearing Customs and Immigration at the airport, a Campeche Fly Fishing Tarpon Bay representative will greet you just outside of Customs and Immigration.
From the airport, you will be driven to Hotel Plaza Campeche in the Campeche Fly Fishing Tarpon Bay shuttle - a comfortable, air-conditioned extended van. The drive is comfortable, as all roads traveled are paved and well maintained.
